Where is Villefranche-sur-Mer ?

Located on the south-east coast of France, Villefranche-sur-Mer is one of many beautiful cities within the French Riviera. This is France’s second most visited tourist spot after the Parisian region. Despite having a population of just over 5 million people, the Cote d’Azur attracts more than 10 million oversea visitors. So as you can imagine, the Riviera is a thriving region. And is it really any surprise? After all, the south-east coast benefits from up to 330 days of annual sunshine and over 150 km of coastline. Even in the winter months you can find people taking a stroll along the white sandy beaches. Sometimes even going for a quick dip into the Mediterranean Sea which borders the coast!

Villefranche-sur-Mer is situated adjoint to the region’s capital city of Nice. Nice is the largest city along the French Riviera and is also home to the only airport catering to the region. Despite there being only one airport servicing so many cities, its never too much of a hassle thanks to the Riviera’s fantastic transport networks. Traveling along the Cote d’Azur has never been easier!

The Old Town – The Old Town of Villefranche-sur-Mer is an absolute treat. A series of narrowly interwoven cobblestone streets, its like something out of a movie. The Old Town owes its charm to the collection of small boutiques and family owned restaurants at every corner. Its also a nice little getaway from the regular hustle and bustle of some of the bigger cities.

Russian Influence – After losing in the Crimean War of 1856, Russia could not keep its war vessels in the Black Sea any longer. Still needing a naval base in the Mediterranean Sea, they stationed their fleet in the Villefranche-sur-Mer harbour. As a result of this, evidence of Russian influence is quite heavy in Villefranche and even Nice.
