Things to do in Saint Tropez France

Saint Tropez is a coastal town in the South of France on the French Riviera, in the Provence-Alps-Cote-d’Azur region. It is an artistic town which attracted the popular international ‘jet set’ in the 1960s and remains famous for its beautiful beaches and buzzing nightlife. The cobblestoned La Ponche quarter used to be a fishing village but is now recognised for its yachts which outnumber the fishing boats in the old port.

What is Saint Tropez famous for?

Saint Tropez is a luxury paradise and a celebrity haven. It is one of the most visited places in France because people come to soak in the glamour and beauty of the French Riviera. This sun-drenched town is famous for its exclusive beach clubs and stunning sandy beaches.

It is well-known for its stylish yachts, designer boutiques, sunbathing celebrities, and vibrant nightlife. Saint Tropez is also a historic town full of old-world charm with its narrow cobblestone streets, gorgeous brightly coloured houses, and picturesque squares. The seaside scenery brings with it a natural beauty with hypnotic deep blue waters and Mediterranean countryside with olive groves, cypresses, and pine trees.

The appeal of Saint Tropez was first identified by the painter Paul Signac in the late 19th century who later brought artists Marquet and Matisse here.  In 1955, the film And God created woman forever changed this old port town by bringing glitz and glamour into the stunning seaside resort.

Lazy days and crazy evenings are famous in Saint Tropez as there is a festive atmosphere at night with lively bars and clubs.

Here are some of the best things to see in Saint Tropez:

Pampelonne beach

Pampelonne beach is the most famous and longest beach in Saint Tropez France. It is where all the world-famous beach clubs are, where the celebrities go to relax and where luxury yachts rest along the bay. It stretches over 5km of white sands and crystal-clear seas. It is spilt into two parts between public areas where you can relax with a towel and your belongings to a variety of beach clubs where you can hire sun loungers and parasols so you can relax in luxury.

If you prefer going to the beach when it is quieter, the best time to go is during the low season towards the end of September when the weather is still nice and warm.

Beach clubs of Pampelonne and Porquerolles Islands

No visit to Saint Tropez France is complete without seeing the beach clubs of Pampelonne and the Porquerolles islands. Why not travel in style and hire a luxury yacht and explore the highlights of the French Riviera? The most popular Saint Tropez charter itinery will pick you up from the town and take you to the most famous beach clubs of Nikki beach, club 55 and Bagatelle or you can cruise along the French Riviera and explore the stylish city of Cannes. Renting a yacht for the day in Saint Tropez is the most perfect way to experience this vibrant city and life on the water in the French Riviera.

Vieux port

The quaint Vieux port is the heart of Saint Tropez where the old fishing village came to life. You will be charmed by the wonderful image of small fishing boats and iconic yachts that are docked in the harbour which is filled with Mediterranean brightly coloured houses and dynamic cafes with outdoor terraces. Artists sell eye-catching paintings portraying scenes of Saint Tropez along the sidewalk at the water’s edge.

Make sure to stop for a refreshing drink and to soak up the sun at the famous Café Senequier along the harbour. It is one of the most pleasant things to do in this old town while admiring its bright red exterior and canopy.

Musee de l‘Annonciade

Perfect for art lovers and one of the top tourist attractions in Saint Tropez, the art museum which occupies the former Chapelle Notre Dame de l’Annonciade is only a short walk away from the harbour. The chapel which dates back to 1510, used to be the church of white penitents, a Catholic brotherhood discovered in the middle ages.

The museum showcases an impressive assortment of impressionist paintings and is a reminder of the villages artistic past. Many of the paintings displayed were created by artists who lived and worked in Saint Tropez in the late 1800s and the beginning of the 20th century.

Maison de Papillon

The Maison de Papillon is a butterfly museum set in a typical Provencal house in the old town. It is a must see in Saint Tropez because it holds collections of a huge number of different species of butterflies including rare types seen in South America and Africa. The museum was created by painter Dany Latigue in his own private home. He is passionate about butterflies and has arranged them in an artistic way so that you can appreciate the details and colours of these beautiful animals through being displayed over landscapes and painted by Latigue. It is the ideal place to appreciate the beauty of art and learn more about butterflies.

Scenic coastal path

If you are into hiking, you will love the stunning coastal path. The route follows the winding peninsula coastline where you will have the opportunity to admire the breath-taking views of the Mediterranean Sea along the way. The hike is not too challenging but can be tricky once you reach the rocky outcroppings. Later you will pass through an interesting cemetery by the sea, past beautiful seaside homes and stretches across forested areas. Once you reach the top, you will be able to see a spectacular view of the harbour of Saint Tropez and the beach at Cavaliere-Sur-Mere. It is best to do this hike in the Spring or Autumn months when the weather is still stunning but not too hot.
