The definitive way to explore any city is on foot. And, the best way to discover everything a new city has to offer is with a well-informed local guide. It all comes down to the type of person; who and what they know. Free Nice Walking Tours puts you under the guidance of a trusted local expert because they come with years of experience and vast knowledge. Try this …
To set the scene, we meet at Place Massena, just by the statue of Apollo, Greek god of music, truth, healing, the sun and light, poetry, and more. And there you have it, Nissa La Bella represented in a single statue.
The colony of Nice was founded around 350 BC by the Greek seafarers who had taken Marseille. They named their colony Nice after the Greek goddess of Victory Nikaia, in honour of their grand victory. Now, check your footwear, and spot any other references to Nikaia? So, you’re walking in the footsteps of a Greek warrior, around a beautiful Italianate-French city, wearing trainers with a big tick on the side and suddenly it all makes sense. Ha, who knew?
Continuing our walking tour of Nice from Place Massena we take in the beautiful Belle Epoque Opera of Nice then head to the Old Town, a must-see for any type of visitor. It is a hive of activity, buzzing both day and night. At its center is the Cours Saleya where we will take a break so you can soak up the breezy Mediterranean vibe, not to be missed on a trip to Nice. Here you can wander around the market, pick up a few goodies and relax for a while. There is so much to see. Look East to Castle Hill and marvel at the Bellanda Tower (Berlioz, King Lear, and all of that!).
Onwards to Galerie des Ponchettes, the world-famous gallery dedicated to temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. In Place Rossetti (named after the Pre-Raphaelite founder Dante Rossetti) you will discover La Cathédrale Ste Réparate, a baroque masterpiece.

Tipping your tour guide not only acknowledges their expertise and hard work but also contributes to supporting their ongoing training and development, as well as the operational, marketing, and management aspects of the tour company. The guides invest significant time and resources in acquiring in-depth knowledge about the destinations they cover, including history, culture, and local customs, which enhances the overall quality of the tour. Your tip helps offset the costs associated with their continuous learning and training, ensuring they stay up-to-date and capable of delivering high-quality experiences. Additionally, tipping plays a vital role in supporting the operational, marketing, and management efforts of the tour company, allowing them to maintain and improve the quality of their services, attract more travelers, and sustain their business. Furthermore, tipping fosters a positive relationship between travelers and guides, fostering a sense of mutual respect and appreciation, which ultimately enhances the overall enjoyment of your travel experience.
One common uncertainty walkers may face is determining the appropriate tip to give. There isn't a set price per walker when tipping local guides, as some may give between €10 and €20, and some even €50. The typical average for these types of tips tends to be around €12. This amount varies based on the quality of the guided tour experience and the financial means of each traveler.
For free tours, while we do not charge participants, there are essential operational expenses associated with organizing and conducting the tours. These expenses include administrative, operational, marketing, and training costs, such as website fees, equipment, and other necessary resources. A portion of the tips we receive helps cover these expenses. However, it's important to emphasize that your guides still receive a fair portion of the tips they earn. Also, for paid and private tours, tips directly benefit the guides.
Certainly! Families are welcome on the tour, and bringing a stroller is entirely feasible. In the old town and along the Promenade des Anglais, you can comfortably use your stroller. In case the tour concludes at the Castle of Nice, while your guide ascends, you have the option to use the elevator and meet the guide and the group at the top of the castle.
