Bath – A UNESCO World Heritage City

The city of Bath, Somerset can be found in the southeast of England, 156 km west of London, and 18 km south of Bristol. This lively city is home to an exquisite range of historical sites and attractions. However, the most notable is without a doubt the Roman-built baths.

Around 60 AD, a Roman temple was built within the city. Over the next 300 years, a grand bathing complex was built. Over the decades, as the baths fell into decay, they have since been reconstructed with 18th century buildings. One of the most impressive historical sites in all of England, it attracts almost 1 million tourists annually.

When the Anglo-Saxons conquered some time during 500 AD, the city slowly began to erect a series of Gothic-style buildings. Most famously is the Bath Abbey. A former monastery now turned Church, it is one of the largest examples of Perpendicular Gothic architecture in the West Country. Decorated in war memorials and impressive murals and stained-glass windows, it truly is a spectacular sight!

Home to several impressive museums and galleries, Bath is also known for being a central hub of the Arts. Some of its most impressive institutes include the Victoria Art Gallery, the Museum of East Asian Art, the Fashion Museum, the Jane Austen Centre and the Herschel Museum of Astronomy. Among many others. Bath is also home to not one, but five grand theatres. All of which attracts internationally renowned playwrights and directors. Not to mention the annual Music and literary Festivals held regularly throughout the year.

Certainly, whatever it is you’re hoping to get out of your holiday, you’ll find it right here. And maybe even more!
