Nice Free Guided Walking Tour

The definitive way to explore any city is on foot. And, the best way to discover everything a new city has to offer is with a well-informed local guide. It all comes down to the type of person; who and what they know. Free Nice Walking Tours puts you under the guidance of a trusted local expert because they come with years of experience and vast knowledge. Try this …

To set the scene, we meet at Place Massena, just by the statue of Apollo, Greek god of music, truth, healing, the sun and light, poetry, and more. And there you have it, Nissa La Bella represented in a single statue.

The colony of Nice was founded around 350 BC by the Greek seafarers who had taken Marseille. They named their colony Nice after the Greek goddess of Victory Nikaia, in honour of their grand victory. Now, check your footwear, and spot any other references to Nikaia? So, you’re walking in the footsteps of a Greek warrior, around a beautiful Italianate-French city, wearing trainers with a big tick on the side and suddenly it all makes sense. Ha, who knew?

Nissa la Bella

Continuing our walking tour of Nice from Place Massena we take in the beautiful Belle Epoque Opera of Nice then head to the Old Town, a must-see for any type of visitor. It is a hive of activity, buzzing both day and night. At its center is the Cours Saleya where we will take a break so you can soak up the breezy Mediterranean vibe, not to be missed on a trip to Nice. Here you can wander around the market, pick up a few goodies and relax for a while. There is so much to see. Look East to Castle Hill and marvel at the Bellanda Tower (Berlioz, King Lear, and all of that!).

Onwards to Galerie des Ponchettes, the world-famous gallery dedicated to temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. In Place Rossetti (named after the Pre-Raphaelite founder Dante Rossetti) you will discover La Cathédrale Ste Réparate, a baroque masterpiece.

Ready to see it for yourself? No problem. Join us on the wonderful FREE walking tour Nice.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for a more private experience for your group. You can book your private walking tour of Nice with one of our amazing tour guides who’ll make sure you experience the city like no other.

FAQs

What is the duration of the tour?

The tour lasts approximately 2 hours

What is the difference between Free Walking Tour of Nice and Free Night Walking Tour of Nice?

The "One Day" walking tour of Nice, starting at 11:00 a.m., provides everyone with a general overview of Nice and serves as an excellent starting point for your vacation. It is typically busier during the summer season, with groups averaging between 20 and 40 people. The "Evening" excursion, starting at 6:00 p.m., allows you to enjoy the stunning evening lightscape!

I’ve booked for a wrong day. Can I change it?

For free tours, we kindly request you to email us at info@rivierabarcrawltours.com to cancel your reservations. Please include either your booking reference number or your tour date, along with your name and last name, in the email. We'll handle the cancellation for you promptly. Then you can book directly on our www.rivierabarcrawltours.com for another available date at your convenience.

I want to cancel my experience completely. How do I do that?

If you intended to join a FREE tour but are no longer able to do so, simply let us know via email at info@rivierabarcrawl.com. For the cancellation of a paid activity (bar crawl, tour, or other activity), we refer you to what is stated in our terms and conditions. "Any cancellation made at least 72 hours in advance will be refunded at 50%." Generally, we do not refund tickets after this time.

How can I identify my guide?

Your guide will be easily recognizable by wearing either a red company t-shirt, carrying a red umbrella, or sporting a red jacket or sweatshirt with the Riviera Bar Crawl Tours logo. Additionally, they will have a red badge displaying the name of your guide. Keep an eye out for our team!

Why is it important to tip my tour guide?"

Tipping your tour guide not only acknowledges their expertise and hard work but also contributes to supporting their ongoing training and development, as well as the operational, marketing, and management aspects of the tour company. The guides invest significant time and resources in acquiring in-depth knowledge about the destinations they cover, including history, culture, and local customs, which enhances the overall quality of the tour. Your tip helps offset the costs associated with their continuous learning and training, ensuring they stay up-to-date and capable of delivering high-quality experiences. Additionally, tipping plays a vital role in supporting the operational, marketing, and management efforts of the tour company, allowing them to maintain and improve the quality of their services, attract more travelers, and sustain their business. Furthermore, tipping fosters a positive relationship between travelers and guides, fostering a sense of mutual respect and appreciation, which ultimately enhances the overall enjoyment of your travel experience.

How much is the recommended gratuity for my guide?

One common uncertainty walkers may face is determining the appropriate tip to give. There isn't a set price per walker when tipping local guides, as some may give between €10 and €20, and some even €50. The typical average for these types of tips tends to be around €12. This amount varies based on the quality of the guided tour experience and the financial means of each traveler.

Do all tips directly benefit my guide?

For free tours, while we do not charge participants, there are essential operational expenses associated with organizing and conducting the tours. These expenses include administrative, operational, marketing, and training costs, such as website fees, equipment, and other necessary resources. A portion of the tips we receive helps cover these expenses. However, it's important to emphasize that your guides still receive a fair portion of the tips they earn. Also, for paid and private tours, tips directly benefit the guides.

Can a baby stroller be accommodated during the walking tour of Nice?

Certainly! Families are welcome on the tour, and bringing a stroller is entirely feasible. In the old town and along the Promenade des Anglais, you can comfortably use your stroller. In case the tour concludes at the Castle of Nice, while your guide ascends, you have the option to use the elevator and meet the guide and the group at the top of the castle.

Where can I park my car in Nice?

The cheapest options are:

  • Parcazur Henri Sappia: 2, Boulevard Henri Sappia, 06100 Nice (4am-2:30am)

  • Parcazur Gorbella: 61, Boulevard Gorbella (corner of 3 rue Mellarede), 06100 Nice (7am - 8pm)

I often take these free walking tours while my husband is busy. They are often a great introduction to a city and a chance to ask a local a few questions about culture, customs, restaurants, things to do etc. Jurina was informative, interactive and engaging. We ate Sooca which I am not sure I would eat without her explanation what it was. recommendation for places to eat. We walked throughout the old city got recommendations for places to eat and up all the stairs to the Castle Hill where the tour finished leaving us time to wander around and enjoy the vista and find the waterfall and the cemetery on the way back down. Well recommended if you are new in town.

When I arrived in Nice the first time doing this tour was the first item on my agenda. I love to have a good overview about the most important sites and a little bit of history when I stay in a new city. I was honestly impressed by the depth of knowledge possessed by my tour guide, an excellent French/English speaking local named Charlie. Thank you for this awesome tour you gave us.

I truly enjoyed learning more about the history of Nice and the old city and their sights even though I am living in Nice for quite a while now. Charlie was kind and also helpful with questions. I also would not care if I had to pay for this tour!

Tour was fabulous, the guide Charlie was excellent too - amazing knowledge and was always counting to be sure we were all there after certain stops we made during the tour. He was also considerate to those who was slow with the walk. Tour was relaxing, good combination of walking about and stops where he told us interesting facts and stories. Definitely recommend!

Although it was the day after the terror attack, and we are not expecting the walking tour to continue, we just walk around Place Massena to see how everything is getting on. There we found Charlie, and he still decided to continue the tour even though there were just 3 participants. The walk was not too long, and the closure of Castle hill made it shorter, but then we learned a lot. He's such a very nice guy and his English is superb. This is the first time in France that I did not struggle to understand every word that he said. Very knowledgeable about the history and significance of parts of the city. If this tour is paid, we will still definitely do it. BTW, we tried that gnocchi that he was suggesting and it's wonderful, plus the gelato to die for. Well done mate ;P Hope to get on with their pub crawl in the future.

This is a very enjoyable 2.5 hrs walk around Nice covering all the main sites. My guide, Kate, had loads of cool stories about the history and famous residents of Nice She also recommended the pub crawl so I joined it later that day. We 'hopped' around some of the best bars in old town. With these 2 activities I had a perfect first day in Nice!

The tour started at Place Massena with a nice introduction. Then we made a good stop at Cours Saleya. I loved it that we had enough free time to browse on the market and buy some food for a lunch. Afterwards we walked up to Colline du Chateau park. Incredible of the coast. The tour ended up there but the lovely guide stayed with us for a little chat and to answer some more questions. I like!

When I travel to a new city, I usually do a walking tour to understand the city a bit better by learning a bit of history etc. Thats why I really like and appreciate the 'free tour concept So I found this tour of Nice on Tripadvisor. Unfortunately on the day I arrived they didnt have enough people so I did it on another day but it was great! There were only a few other people joining but I liked that to be honest. The guide was really nice and provide good tips on the city and restaurant. Her knowledge of the town and history was good already since she started to do tours only a few weeks ago. I recommend!

pleasant guide, charming city and very informative tour

I've done a lot of tours but this one was extremely memorable. For me personally, Graham, made all the difference. The guide was pleasant, knowledgeable and very accommodating. My personal highlight was the lunch market where we had time to try some specialties so I had some delicious pasta. Thank you Graham for showing us around the city you live in!

knowledgable guide and beautiful tour

We did the free walking tour in Nice with a small group of just 5 people. Although our guide isn’t originally from the area, we was really knowledgable. He took us to some beautiful stops and also climbed with us all the way to the mountain top to present us a breathtaking view over the French Riviera. I highly recommend this tour. Thanks again!

best city walk I did so far

On Saturday me and two friends of mine (from Amsterdam) did the city walk with Shawn. I have done a city walk in several cities but Shawn is honestly the best so far! His humour and stories are so nice and his motivation to get you up Castle Hill was incredible. Through the walk we learned a lot about Nice and saw the truly parts of the city I think. Highly recommended if you are in the city.

Awesome tour

Me and my friend, both in their 50s, joined Shawn and a group of about 15 visitors from all over the world for a 2+ hour walking tour of Nice. It was simply awesome! The guide was charming and informative and told us a lot of interesting things about the city. We listened to so many stories that are new to us, even though we are annual visitors to Nice. We would be happy to join Shawn on another tour!
